Death row inmates from San Quentin Prison are being transferred to a facility in Southern California, and locals are not happy about it. Twenty-six inmates will serve their life sentences at the California Institution for Men in Chino. City officials say the San Bernardino County prison is in poor condition and not capable of holding hardened criminals. They fear an inmate with nothing to lose could escape the aging facility. A report on the condition of the Chino prison called for its demolition in 2014. Chino officials asked the California Department of Corrections not to transfer the inmates, but the request was denied. San Quentin will eventually be converted into a rehabilitation facility.
