The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is calling for changes to California’s system of testing water to make sure it’s safe. Spokeswoman Kristie Sullivan says the way California tests for hazardous chemicals to prevent them from reaching the water supply is outdated and expensive.

Currently, products and waste are put in a fish tank, killing the fish, and then officials test the levels of toxic chemicals in the fish. But Sullivan says there are alternatives that are more cost efficient and that if California adopted them, companies could increase the testing of materials and provide better data for public safety.
